Part 4: Getting Practical—Writing in a Straight Line

Our goal today is all about getting some practical practice in, and we are going to focus on one of the simplest ways to make any note look instantly neater: straight writing.
When our lines stay level, our words naturally look more intentional and beautiful. We don't need any special calligraphy guides for this.
Grab some notepad paper or a ruler and mark out your own lines. If you use a ruler, you can do this with a pencil—just press lightly so we can easily rub the lines out later once our ink is dry.
Another fantastic option is to place a sheet of lined paper directly behind the plain page or card you want to write on. If your paper isn't too thick, you can often see the dark lines shining through from behind to follow along as we write. It keeps our final piece completely clean without needing an eraser at all.
Your Next Project: The Flexible List
Now that we know how to set up our guides, our project is to create a meaningful list for someone. Lists are the perfect playground for straight lines because they naturally require structure.
The beautiful thing about this project is that it can be adapted to absolutely any situation or person in your life. Here are a few ideas to get us started, but feel free to invent your own:
An "I've Got This" List: Write down three or four household chores you are going to take care of today so your partner can completely relax.
A Prayer List: Think of a few people who are going through a hard time, write their names down, and place the list somewhere you will see it often—like the front of the fridge or a bedroom door.
A Comfort Menu: If you are cooking a warm meal for a sick friend or a lonely neighbour, write down a beautiful little menu showing what you’ve prepared for them.
A Day of Care Schedule: Map out a gentle timeline of a relaxing day you’ve planned for a loved one (e.g., 10:00 am Coffee, 2:00 pm Walk in the park).
Lightly pencil your straight lines onto a piece of paper, write out your list items slowly, and let the ink dry completely before rubbing out your guides. We’ll be left with a neat, structured gift that shows immense care through both our actions and our words.
